⭐ Open Door Band: Our First Meeting Details Are Here!

I’m thrilled to share our official rehearsal schedule and everything you need to know as we get ready for our very first Open Door Band meeting on Monday, January 12 at the Olympia Recreation Center!

Over the past few months, so many residents have reached out with excitement about learning an instrument, returning to music, or simply trying something new in a friendly, structured environment. I can’t wait for us to begin.

Below are all the details for our weekly meetings, what to expect, and how to prepare if you’ve already chosen your instrument.

🎶 First Meeting & Weekly Schedule

Mondays, beginning January 12

9:00–11:30 AM

Olympia Recreation Center

Please bring your Villages Resident ID or valid Guest ID.

Open Door Band is designed for true beginners, rusty returners, and anyone who wants to learn in a warm, supportive space. Each meeting follows the same simple format so you always know what’s coming next.

🗓 Weekly Meeting Structure

9:00–9:20 — Learning to Read Music

Clear, gentle instruction in rhythm and notation. No experience needed.

9:20–9:40 — Instrument of the Week

Each week we spotlight a different instrument: how it sounds, what it does, and what beginners should know.

9:40–10:00 — How to Band

The essentials of ensemble skills — posture, tuning, counting together, following a conductor, and rehearsal etiquette.

10:00–10:20 — Break & Ensemble Setup

A chance to stretch, socialize, and assemble instruments before we play.

10:20–11:30 — Ensemble Time

We make music together using simple, tuneful selections.

No pressure. No auditions. Just learning and enjoyment.

😊 Come for the Parts You Need

Open Door Band is intentionally flexible:

  • Attend the full morning — or join for the sections most relevant to you.

  • Experienced players or confident returners may arrive at 10:20 for ensemble time.

  • If you’re still exploring instruments, you’re welcome to sit in and listen to help you decide.

  • You may leave after any portion if that suits your schedule or energy.

Everyone learns at their own pace — and that’s exactly how this band is designed.

🎺 If You’ve Already Chosen Your Instrument

Here are a few optional steps you may find helpful:

  • Get your instrument now (or rent one). This gives you time to compare options and avoid the January rush.

  • Optional private lesson: Just one or two “getting started” sessions can help with holding the instrument, assembling it safely, and making your first sound.

  • Have your instrument checked: If you already own one, a quick tune-up at a local shop can prevent first-day frustrations.

  • Aim for one clear sound: No songs or notes needed — just a basic tone if you can manage it.

If you’re still undecided, don’t worry — the Instrument of the Week segment is designed to help you discover what feels right.

📬 What’s Coming Next

Before January 12, I’ll send at least one more update with:

  • The first music we’ll play

  • What to bring

  • Optional resources for getting comfortable before we begin

Thank you all for your incredible support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. I’ve met so many wonderful residents who are eager to learn, play, and make music together — and I’m honored to be leading this new, welcoming community.

If you know someone who might enjoy a friendly, beginner-focused band, I’d be grateful if you shared our Facebook page with them.

I cannot wait to open the door — together — on January 12. 💚🎶
